What are OEM Profile Keycaps?
If you are new to the mechanical keyboards, you might see different descriptions such as "OEM profile", "Cherry profile", "XDA profile" and "SA profile" and wonder what they all mean.
In short, profiles mean heights. The most glaring difference among them is the overall height of keycaps. For a detailed walk through, please check out our Guide to Keycap Profiles.
OEM profile is known as the standard profile since it is commonly used in many modern and prebuilt mechanical keyboards.
It is mass produced and considered standard among commonly branded mechanical keyboards such as Logitech, Corsair, and Razer.
OEM profile keycaps are not uniform, meaning different rows would have a different design and height. They also have cylindrical tops that conform to your fingertips to increase comfort during typing or gaming.
What are Cherry profile keycaps?
Cherry profile sets are aggressively sculpted keycaps and feature some of the lowest profile keycaps on the market. This is especially true when compared to OEM and SA keycaps.
Because of their low profile, each stroke of Cherry keycaps provides a more robust sound due to there being less room within the keycap for sound to travel around. Being sculpted means that each row varies from one another, allowing users to feel out each row, which creates a sense of differentiation across the entire keyboard layout.
Despite each row feeling different from one another, Cherry keycaps are quite comfortable compared to standard, uniform keycaps. When it comes to gaming and general typing, many people use Cherry keycaps to meet their needs, mainly due to the low profile of each keycap.
What is PBT material?
PBT (short for “polybutylene terephthalate”) is one of the hardest and most durable keycap materials available. Unlike other materials, PBT does not turn yellow over time, and is extremely resistant to heat and chemicals.
Double Shot vs. Dye Sublimation
Both are processes used for creating the legend on your keycap. Dye-sub involves printing the legends onto the keycap, while double-shot uses injection molding to insert the legend. Both methods offer great durability and feel.
