What are SA Profile Keycaps?
If you are new to the mechanical keyboards, you might see different descriptions such as "OEM profile", "Cherry profile", "XDA profile" and "SA profile" and wonder what they all mean.
In short, profiles mean heights. The most glaring difference among them is the overall height of keycaps. For a detailed walk through, please check out our Guide to Keycap Profiles.
Among the tallest keycaps available, SA profile keycaps have rounded tops and a sculpted contour between rows. They're excellent for producing a deep “thoc” that many enthusiasts love. SA is also known for having a more vintage look that many appreciate.
What is ABS material?
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic is an emulsion, where different materials that don't normally mixed are stabilized together as a result of heat, friction and mixing. ABS plastic is a thermoplastic, it can be melted down and remolded easily, making it a highly recyclable plastic.
LEGO bricks are ABS plastic.
ABS vs. PBT
In the earlier days of mechanical keyboards, the prevailing wisdom was that PBT was higher quality and more desirable than ABS from any lens. Unfortunately, it’s not longer that simple.
There are 4 core truths when comparing PBT and ABS. Outside of these truths, other things such as cost and thickness of keycaps are dependent on manufacturer.
ABS will get shiny and slick, PBT will not
ABS produces a softer sound, PBT produces a crisper sound
ABS will have more vibrant color options
PBT is more prone to warping and bending on larger keycap sizes
